Shiga University was established in 1949, as part of a new system for national universities in Japan.
At present, Shiga University has three faculties at the undergraduate level. The Faculty of Education, located in Otsu, dates back to 1874 when Shiga Normal School was established in Otsu. The Faculty of Economics, located in Hikone, was originally Hikone Commercial College, which was founded in 1922. Both faculties have carried on the history and the glorious traditions of their predecessor schools, while establishing post-graduate schools to further education and research in their respective fields.
In 2017, the new Faculty of Data Science is established. It is spotlighted as the first faculty of Data Science in Japan. This faculty commits to contribute for social development to nurture excellent personnel who leads the optimal decision-making based on the data utilization for the society in the future. Both education and economics students will understand data and know how to handle it, while data science students will develop the ability to apply their knowledge and skills in any field by first mastering education and economics; they will all broaden their knowledge over a wide range of subject areas. Shiga University will advance its education and research activities through integration of Arts and Sciences.
