The city is easily accessible by train—less than 90 minutes from central Tokyo—making it close enough to experience the excitement of the metropolis, yet far enough to enjoy a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle surrounded by nature. Mito is a welcoming city that blends history, culture, and modern living. It is home to Kairakuen Garden, one of Japan’s three most celebrated gardens, famous for its seasonal beauty, especially during the plum blossom festival in spring. You can also explore the Ibaraki Museum of Modern Art, enjoy concerts at the Art Tower Mito, or take peaceful walks around Lake Senba, a popular spot among students and local residents alike. The city offers a safe environment, affordable living costs, and friendly communities that make it easy for international students to adapt and thrive. Our Mito Campus serves as the main hub of Ibaraki University, hosting several faculties and facilities where students pursue a wide range of academic interests. The campus provides a comfortable and open learning environment, with convenient access to libraries, laboratories, sports grounds, and student lounges. You will also find many opportunities to participate in local events, cultural exchanges, and volunteer activities that connect you with the local community. Hitachi Campus Ibaraki University’s Hitachi Campus is located in Hitachi City, a beautiful coastal area in northern Ibaraki Prefecture. Facing the Pacific Ocean, the campus offers a stunning natural environment with sea views, fresh air, and a calm atmosphere—an ideal setting for both study and research. The city is about two hours from Tokyo by train, providing easy access to the capital while maintaining a relaxed lifestyle surrounded by nature. Hitachi has a long history as one of Japan’s leading industrial cities and is known as the birthplace of the global technology company Hitachi, Ltd. This close connection to industry makes the campus a vibrant place for students interested in science, engineering, and innovation. Collaborative research and internship opportunities allow students to link their studies to real-world applications. Beyond academics, Hitachi offers a comfortable living environment with oceanfront parks, local festivals, and scenic hiking trails. Students can enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the community, explore local seafood cuisine, or take part in traditional cultural events throughout the year. The city’s balance of nature, technology, and human warmth makes it a unique place to experience Japanese life while pursuing academic excellence. At the Hitachi Campus, you will find a strong spirit of curiosity and collaboration—an inspiring environment where learning meets innovation, and where students from around the world can grow together by the sea. At Ibaraki University, we value global perspectives and welcome students from around the world. Here, you can build your academic future while discovering Japan’s rich traditions and the warm hospitality of Mito. Come and experience a campus life that combines learning, friendship, and discovery in the heart of Ibaraki. Ami Campus The Ami Campus is located in Ami Town, a peaceful community in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, surrounded by open fields and gentle countryside landscapes. The campus serves as the center of the College of Agriculture, where students engage in advanced studies and research in food, life, and environmental sciences. About one hour from Tokyo and close to Tsukuba Science City, Ami offers both the quiet of rural Japan and the convenience of nearby academic and research networks. At Ami Campus, learning extends beyond the classroom. Students have access to experimental farms, greenhouses, and laboratories that support hands-on research in sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and food innovation. The close relationship between teachers, students, and the local community fosters a welcoming environment where everyone learns together through practical experience and cultural exchange. Life in Ami is relaxed and friendly. You can enjoy local markets filled with fresh produce, take part in seasonal festivals, and visit the famous Ushiku Daibutsu, one of the world’s tallest Buddha statues. The town’s rich natural surroundings and caring residents make it an ideal place for focused study and personal growth. Ami Campus invites you to experience Japan’s connection between nature and learning—where education, sustainability, and community come together to shape a better future. |
