Ueda Campus 020-8550 3-18-8, Ueda, Morioka, Iwate Google MapSchools: United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences [Doctoral Program]Iwate Prefecture is about 500 kilometers north of Tokyo in the Tohoku region at 39° 41'N (lat.) and 141° 9'E (long.). As the second largest prefecture in Japan, its area is seven times larger than that of Tokyo. The prefecture of Iwate is well known both for its spectacular natural beauty, such as the Rikuchu (sawtooth) Coast and Mt. Iwate (called "NANBU-FUJI"), as well as for its cultural assets, including the Chusonji Temple in the town of Hiraizumi. In addition, many typical Japanese recreational attractions such as hot springs and ski resorts abound. Iwate University is located in Morioka City, the capital of Iwate Prefecture. It is one of the principal cities in the Tohoku region. The population of Morioka is approximately 280,000. Three rivers, the Kitakami River, the Nakatsu River, and the Shizukuishi River, merge in the center of the city. Morioka is a city surrounded by historic sights and unspoiled nature. Established in 1949 as a national university, Iwate University was inaugurated into a national university corporation along with 86 other national universities in 2005. The university is composed of the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Science and Engineering, and Agriculture. There are currently over 5,000 students enrolled, served by 700 administrative and teaching staff. Also, Iwate University hosts more than 150 international students from about 20 countries. The campus is about a 20-minute walk from Morioka JR Train Station and beautiful downtown Morioka. It is very convenient for students to find part-time jobs, go shopping, and enjoy city life. Also, on the campus, students will find many facilities for their studies and extracurricular activities, such as the university library, gymnasiums, and a swimming pool. The Student Union, "The University Co-op," has a bookstore, ticketing service, travel service, housing service and food kiosks. |
