Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine and Tokyo University of Fisheries merged to become Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) in October 2003. After that, TUMSAT has been provided education to develop specialists who helped govern and manage ocean use in Japan. Based on its motto “Voices from the Ocean,” TUMSAT has focused its efforts since the merger on fulfilling its mission to help Japan develop as a maritime nation and play a role in its contributions to the international community. From this fundamental perspective, we offer students opportunities for comprehensive education and research related to the ocean with a focus on the development of highly specialized researchers and professionals. Our aim is to form an internationally outstanding center for marine education and research in order to develop specialists who will play leading roles in industry, government and academia in international settings. Furthermore, taking advantage of our specialization in oceanography, we particularly focus on promoting and advancing global scientific research in the maritime field, comprehensively covering the environment, resources and energy, and including compound and peripheral aspects of these three areas.
